Clarksville, Tenn. – Clarksville Gas and Water began its natural gas system annual survey yesterday in the downtown Clarksville area by professional engineering and consulting group, Atwell.
Atwell’s team of two workers will physically inspect Clarksville’s complete natural gas distribution system from the point where the city receives natural gas to industrial, commercial and residential areas and pipeline right-of-ways.
The Clarksville natural gas service area includes Montgomery County and select areas in Cheatham and Robertson counties in Tennessee and Christian and Todd counties in Kentucky.
The survey is performed one time each calendar year in addition to routine internal inspections to ensure the integrity and safety of the system according to federal and state regulations.
The complete survey is expected to be finished by late July 2017.

Cost-free service allows mobile payments
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Clarksville Gas and Water has launched “Pay by Text” as a convenient payment option for customers to pay their utility bill anytime, anywhere on any cell phone.
Pay by Text is a cost-free service that delivers registered customers a brief monthly text alert with the bill amount and due date. If a payment method is stored on the account, the customer can simply respond with “OK” to pay instantly. If no payment method is stored, the customer can click on the invoice web link to access a secure online billing portal to process payment. A confirmation payment receipt text message will follow.
Here are the simple steps to register for Pay by Text:
• Log In to your Gas and Water WebConnect account, www.clarksvillegw.com, and select, “Make Payment.”
• Click on the “Home” button or “My Account” at the top right of the screen.
• Select “Pay by Text” and simply follow the instructions.
• Be sure to wait for the Registration Text Message on your cell phone to verify and complete.
Once registration is verified, monthly bill text alerts will automatically be delivered from “74121” and begin with the next bill. Standard data fees and text messaging rates may apply based on individual mobile phone plans.
“We are excited to add Pay by Text to our lineup of payment options,” Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan said. “We’re always looking for ways to use technology to make interacting with the City more convenient, and we’re especially happy that this service is available at no charge to customers.”
Pay by Text is powered by InvoiceCloud, Gas and Water’s secure online payment portal, and can be accessed online at www.clarksvillegw.com. Please look for the InvoiceCloud web address, https://invoicecloud.com, in the web browser to ensure you are on the secure bill payment site.
Legitimate third-party online bill payment services are available and some may design their home page to appear similar to the Gas and Water payment page, but customers should be aware that a fee may be charged and the payment does not post in real time. In fact, payments made though bill-payment services may take a few days to post to an account and possibly cause past due status, late fees or even service deactivation.

Clarksville Gas and Water Department contractors will be in your area very soon replacing existing water mains to accommodate the road widening project on US41A/Madison St. As part of this project, Clarksville Gas and Water contractors will replace and reconnect your service line from the new water main to your new water meter and meter setter. The new replacement setter includes a check valve (backflow preventer).
When a backflow prevention device is placed on a water service line, the water that has been delivered through the customer's meter is prevented from returning through the meter to the water main, thereby preventing potential contamination of the water supply by cross connections. This creates a closed loop system within the customer's water system. This condition may result in a condition to the customer’s internal plumbing that is called “Thermal Expansion”.
What is Thermal Expansion?
Thermal expansion is an increase in water pressure due to heated water having nowhere to go in a closed system. When hot water is used it is replaced in the water heater with cold water. As the cold water is heated in the water heater it expands.
The closed system leaves little or no space for expansion. The result is a potential increase in water pressure that may damage water heaters, plumbing systems and fixtures.
What can be done about thermal expansion?
There are signs to look for to identify potential problems before more serious ones occur. Please learn the signs of thermal expansion from the list below.
Some signs of thermal expansion
The relief valve on the water heater drips during the recovery cycle. Hot water pipes make a creaking sound.
There is a sudden surge of water when a faucet is first turned on, then the pressure drops.
Premature failure of water heaters, plumbing and fixtures.
Hot water in the cold water lines.
It is important to know that the water heater relief valve should not be used as a means of controlling thermal expansion. Instead, contact a plumbing professional if you suspect a problem. The plumber can schedule an inspection and install proper thermal expansion control methods.
Current plumbing codes require the installation of thermal expansion relief devices in "closed systems". The two most common methods are to install either an expansion tank, or a thermal device installed on the cold water line to the tank. We suggest you discuss the best solution for your needs with a licensed plumber.
